Parent Kit

About Parent Kit

Who's behind this

One UK parent, not a company. There's no team, no office, and deliberately no name attached. The point of this site is the numbers, not who built it. If that changes, this page will say so.

Why it exists

I got confused by our own nursery invoices. Funded hours and Tax-Free Childcare interact in ways that are genuinely hard to work out from gov.uk's guidance alone. One scheme reduces the bill first, the other tops up whatever's left, and neither page really explains what that means for the number you'll actually be charged. I looked for a calculator that combined the two properly and couldn't find one that did it well, so I built one for our own household. It seemed worth cleaning up and publishing in case other parents were stuck on the same thing.

Where the rules come from

Every rate and threshold on this site is sourced directly from gov.uk: income tax and National Insurance, the funded childcare hours and Tax-Free Childcare rules, Child Benefit and the High Income Child Benefit Charge, the pension annual allowance, and so on. Each calculator shows a “rules current as of” date pulled from its own source file, so you can see exactly when it was last checked against the official guidance rather than taking that on trust.

How the calculations work

Every calculation is covered by an automated test suite that checks the maths against hand-verified examples before anything goes live. The logic isn't just eyeballed once and left alone. Rates and thresholds live in separate, dated configuration files rather than being buried inside the calculation code, and get updated each April when the new tax year's figures are confirmed, or sooner if a rule changes outside the usual cycle.

What this site is, and isn't

The childcare calculator currently covers England only; funded hours are devolved and the other UK nations run structurally different schemes, so rather than guess at numbers for Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, those options link to the official guidance instead.

Everything here is an estimate for planning and comparison, not financial or legal advice, and not a substitute for checking your own position. Your childcare provider's invoice, your payslip, and gov.uk itself are always the source of truth. If a number here disagrees with one of those, trust the invoice and let me know.

Found something wrong?

If a number looks off, a rule has changed since it was last checked, or there's a calculator you wish existed, get in touch at hello@parent-kit.com. Corrections get fixed, not ignored.
